In many industries including the oil & gas, construction, forestry and the government sector, having an accredited OHS program (such as the Certificate of Recognition (COR) in Alberta) is a prerequisite to tender for business. Subcontractors or service providers that want to bid on these projects need to prove that they have a satisfactory OHS program in place and that their employees have received required safety training. The best way of ensuring the latter is to have an accredited OHS program. Though safety standards are voluntary, and not required in all provinces, certain industries are enforcing it as a prerequisite to do business.
